Carbon Credit Micro Finance Project

Carbon Credit Micro Finance Project: Carbon offsetting project is one of the unique and leading program since the establishment of RECED. The project has been funding each year by Sustain Limited, in order to install the solar home system in poor house hold of remote Nepalese communities. Goal of the project: To reduce emission of carbon dioxide produced from kerosene light through the replacement of Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs), especially though the solar light in remote villages of Nepal. Aim of the Project: - To improve health and quality of life in rural community and to improve the local and global environment by replacing ineffective and polluted technologies with Solar Energy. - To provide the subsidized solar home system in the deprived communities. - To get rid off indoor pollution that is produced by kerosene light and fat wood. - To provide clean and safe solar light for the children at home. - To reduce other health problems such as head ache, eye and respiratory problems caused by kerosene light and fat wood. - To conserve the forest and environment. Project Description The Sustain Limited provides micro credit fund to RECED in order to install Solar Home System (SHS) to reduce its annual carbon emission and in the mean time to improve the quality life of rural Nepalese people through the Renewable Energy Technologies, especially solar power. RECED has got MoU with Sustain Limited to choose suitable households, installation of SHS and to prepare the financial paper work, and submit the report to Sustain Limited, UK. With this, RECED has to find the remote and deprived community where grid electricity will not be access for at least five years time. According to the agreement, the project work will be divided in mainly four phases. In first phase field survey and household selection, second phase is installation and documentation, third phase is continuation of monitoring of installation and report submission. Project Module The module of the project is unique. Out of total amount of micro-credit fund, 5o percent has donated to the selected households and rest 50 percent should pay back by the households within the duration of 18 months time in monthly installment or after installation. The amount which has to pay back within 18 months installment is the amount equal to the amount that they use to purchase for kerosene in one month. This has benefitted the project recipients economically that they don’t have to put off huge capital at once for the SHS. The amount which is paid back from the project recipients will be deposited in the Carbon Credit Revolving Fund. This revolving fund is used to install the next SHS, either by some additional micro-credit fund or own itself. 2.4 Carbon Credit Micro Finance Project Module Chart: Chart 1: Carbon Credit Micro Finance Project Module Chart Technical Description Solar Home System Technical Description Each Solar Home System (SHS) consists of a solar photovoltaic panel, a battery, and electronic systems for powering 3 lights.
